Reflective clothing is a necessity for the early-morning and late-night workout crowd, and Consumer Reports recently tested several popular brands to see which ones stand out.

Greg Cohen, who survived after being hit while jogging at dusk, says he's learned his lesson about wearing proper attire.

"Wearing something bright or hi-viz (high visibility) is the difference between getting back to your home or winding up in the ER," he said.

Testers checked out different tops that promise to make people more visible.

A Betabrand shirt with reflective thread looks great on the company's website, but Consumer Reports found it's not visible from 300 feet, the distance it takes for a car to stop if it's going 60 mph.

A $180 Bike jacket top was much easier to see, but it still didn't do as well in tests as a $15 safety vest that includes big, bright stripes.
